Cristina Dosuleanu

Abstract

The first Romanian publication that debated only economic matters was the Mercury newspaper, which was printed for the first time in Braila, on 18 December 1839, as an expression of economic and trading information needs of merchants from Braila. In the program, the teacher Ioan Penescu clearly states the cause and types of information to be publicized; which arouses the interest of traders from both Moldova and the Tara Romaneasca. For the first time in the Romanian news history they wrote about problems of economic and politic matter and also assess and comment on innovative ideas of the fathers of economics. For instance Adam Smith  who militated for free trading and capitalism, also Francois Quesnay who contained with voluntary work in economics and sustained  that the capital gains was possible only in nature and therefor only in agriculture. More intresting information about the dynamics of trading activities from important ports in Europe and in the country, the merchants had the opportunity to find out about laws which governed other trading activities in different ports, but also theoretical or practical concepts about economy and agriculture. This publication opened a new important road for the economical journalism, but also for economical science in general, because the thoroughly studying of this area began much later in the history of Romania.
