Abstract

In the Central and Eastern European countries and in Romania as well, foreign investments plays an
essential part in the process of structural reform, by economic modernization, inurement and consolidation of
market mechanisms and competition encouragement. Moreover, foreign investments represent an important bet
for these states, and input of foreign capital is a prerequisite for a steady financing of deficits in the balance of
payments. The membership of the European Union (EU) has acted as a magnet for all former socialist countries
concerning the attraction of direct foreign investments.
The present paper aims to highlight some aspects of the investment environment in Romania and other
Central and Eastern European countries, EU members, as well as the main social effects of this process.
